BEFORE/After CARE

BEFORE YOUR ELECTROLYSIS APPOINTMENT

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Dry follicles are more challenging to treat. Your session will be more tolerable and effective with hydrated follicles! Drink plenty of water the day before, the day of, and the day after your appointment.

2. Clean and moisturize your skin. The day before treatment, you could also use a gentle exfoliant to prepare the skin and release any trapped hair.

3. Hygiene. Clean skin reduces the risk of infection and irritation. Please arrive free of makeup, lotion, oil, or deodorant in the treatment area. Shower before you arrive for a body treatment.

4. Let the hair grow. We can only treat hair that we can see; the longer the hair, the easier and faster we can work. Depending on how fast your hair grows, this could mean two days or a week’s growth. You would know it’s long enough if you can grasp the hairs with tweezers. This part can be hard in the beginning, but it will be worth it in the end!

5. Pain relief. To make treatments more comfortable, consider taking your favorite pain reliever 30-45 minutes before your treatment. You can also apply a topical numbing cream before your appointment. Some female clients are more sensitive before or during their menstrual cycle, so plan your appointments accordingly.

6. Things to avoid.

• Stimulants like caffeine, sugar, soda, and chocolate may affect sensitivity.

• Excessive sun exposure can dilate blood vessels, and sunburned skin cannot be treated.

• Retinol and other skin treatments, such as facials, chemical peels, and dermaplaning, that can cause increased skin irritation. Discontinue use for a few days before your electrolysis session.

AFTER YOUR ELECTROLYSIS APPOINTMENT

Redness and swelling are normal reactions, and they usually disappear within a few hours but may last longer.

1. Do not touch! Don't skip this one step even if you don’t do anything else. Bacteria are everywhere, so don’t touch, rub, scratch, or itch the treated area, as it can cause your skin to break out.

2. Soothe your skin. After treatment, we recommend using Witch Hazel or Aloe Vera as needed. Apply an ice pack to the area to reduce swelling. You could also use Neosporin or another antibacterial ointment right after treatment. If reactions persist, apply Hydrocortisone, Cortisone, or Cortaid (1%).

3. Avoid using products. Do not use makeup, soaps, lotions, or sunscreen on the day of treatment. The next day you could resume use of your usual products if the skin has healed.

4. Stay out of the sun. We recommend using sunscreen the next day and staying out of the sun for a week to reduce any chance of pigmentation, irritation, and infection.

5. Don’t sweat. For 24 hours after treatment, avoid hot showers, saunas, working out, or anything that could make you perspire.

6. Other reactions. You could get small fluid formations that resemble whiteheads. It is important not to squeeze, pop, or scratch them. You can use a washcloth or a light exfoliant to open them. Applying a topical acne cream or an Epsom Salt compress on the area can be helpful. (Mix 1 tsp. of Epsom Salts with ½ cup of warm water, soak a cotton pad in the solution, and let the compress sit on the affected area for 10-15 minutes).

7. Don’t tweeze! The next best alternatives are shaving, cutting, or clipping the hair until your next session.

8. Talk to us. We want your experience to be as comfortable as possible. We need to know how your skin reacted post-treatment so that adjustments can be made to minimize negative reactions. If you experience any worrisome reactions, please text us at 803-487-4232.

IN BETWEEN APPOINTMENTS

NO TWEEZING, WAXING, OR THREADING!

New growth is expected. It is best to leave your hair untouched during your electrolysis treatment. However, if necessary, you can shave or trim the hair.

Avoid using temporary hair removal methods such as plucking, waxing, sugaring, threading, or dermaplaning, as they will interfere with or delay the results of your electrolysis treatment.

On your next appointment, the hair roots will be shallower and weaker and, therefore, can be treated more effectively.

We do not recommend waiting more than three weeks between sessions.
